Over the last 21 years, through my company Medex, have organized 5 large scale Expeditions to all corner of Nepal. These have been complex affairs with multiple objectives that include trekking, mountaineering and research into high altitude medicine. Between 50 and 75 members, have participated in each trip. As you can imagine such complicated expeditions have required through planning and meticulous attention to detail. For the first 2 Expedition we used very large and well known Trekking Agents and had indifferent service. Then we discovered Sherpa Brothers Pvt. Ltd, who ran our trip to the Hongu and Hinku Valleys in 2003. Even in the midst of the Maoist uprising this trip was a phenomenal success thanks to the hard work and planning of Tenji- the eldest of the 6 brothers. In 2008 we went to the Hidden Valley and Furba had, by then taken on much of the responsibility for running the company and his performance was superb. At the tender age of 23 he came as a Sardar and made the task of shepherding a multinational group of 60 folk around Dhaulagiri and up to Mustang seems effortless. He manages to conjure jeeps for us to get back to Kathmandu in time to catch our international flights.
I am just back from Medex 2015 which saw 50 of us traverse the Manaslu Circuit with a research Base Camp at 5,100 meters just below the larkya La. This time we had many things conspiring against us. Early on there was a very serious injury when a member stumbled and fell of the track. Furba and his team performed the rescue and arranged a swift evacuation. This spring snow was very heavy which meant that our Base Camp was deep in snow instead of being on an Alpine meadow. Despite this Furba managed, with his team to get 670 kg of research gear in the right place at the right time. A herculean effort given the conditions. Then back in Kathmandu disaster stuck in the form of a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that reduced the country chaos. Sherpa Brothers once again came up trumps and made sure that the Medex teams were safe and well cared for. Pemba one of the younger brothers, became an almost permanent fixture at the airport ensuring that all members were able to fly out at the earliest opportunity despite the chaos at the airport and throughout Nepal.
In all my dealings with Sherpa Brothers over 12 years, I have always had the utmost confidence in them. They behave professionally and yet provide a very friendly personalized service. They have great integrity and are very resourceful even in the face of a national calamity. I have no hesitation in recommending them whether your planned adventure is large and complex or a simple tea house trek for one person. You will not be disappointed and will make Sherpa friends for life!
